In 2014, we sailed on the ship Aldonia to Cuba. Aldonia, the first ship granted permission to travel to Cuba, was on its 16th voyage to the island. We were part of a cultural exchange program, with a goal to interact with the Cuban people. We visited Santiago de Cuba, Cienfuegos and, of course, Havana.
Through my photographs, I tried to capture the spirit of the people, which was vibrant and alive, while the cities we visited were crumbling and disintegrating. The contrast was stark.
We left Cuba two weeks before Castro died. What changes will be made in the future, we cannot know, but we will watch and wait with hope that whatever happens, it will improve the lives of the Cuban people.
