JEANNE GARRETT

PHOTOGRAPHER

Biography

Jeanne Garrett was born in Washington, D.C.

In college, Jeanne minored in photography. Upon graduation in 1980, she joined the campaign staff of candidate Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush photographing dignitaries who visited Illinois. The campaign used her images in its newsletter.

After a corporate career, she renewed her passion for photography transitioning from film to digital.

In 2017, an image from her Memory Farm series won third place in the Farm and Barns exhibit at The Next Picture Show in Dixon, Illinois. Her photo, a diptych entitled Wings won first prize in the Daily Herald Arts Unlimited contest. Her images combining photography, transparency film and paper were included in the 2017 Picture This exhibit at the Norris Cultural Arts Center in St. Charles, Illinois. Another image, Cotton Eye Joe appeared in the Vintage Exhibit and was selected for honors and was awarded Honorable Mention in the In View exhibit at The Art Center of Highland Park in 2018.  She also exhibited in the 2016 Oakton Community College`s juried show.  Her image, Woman in a Man`s World, was selected for the Koehnline Museum of Art`s 2016 – 2017 calendar. In 2015, Jeanne held solo exhibitions at Moon Gallery in Arlington Heights and Harper College in Palatine, Illinois.  Her work has appeared in other venues including the BBC website and the nature magazine, Birds & Blooms.

Jeanne has done several volunteer projects using her photography. She photographed several controlled burn locations for the Cook County Forest Preserve District and donated images to them for their use in determining successful burns. Also, Jeanne photographed the Santa Fe Watershed for the not-for-profit Santa Fe Watershed Association documenting changing conditions and environments along the watershed. She donated images to help support and preserve the watershed.

In another project, Jeanne spearheaded a team of photographers who took photographs at an economically disadvantaged Chicago high school, Chicago Tech Academy, a contract school for low-income students pursuing a STEM curriculum. Her portraits of several hundred high school students make up a two-story mural which now hangs on the school’s exterior.

Jeanne has traveled extensively, visiting six of the seven continents. While her travels inspire her imagery, she is equally happy photographing rural areas of the Midwest.
