About Jeanne

Jeanne Garrett with camera and favorite lensJeanne Garrett, a Midwest-based photographer, did not take a conventional path to photography. She studied photography at Barat College and, following a corporate career in communications, renewed her passion for the medium and devoted her creative life to personal photographic projects.

Garrett’s deep concern for the environment has become a central theme in her work. Her 2026 solo exhibition, The Charcoal Forest, transformed the Tall Grass Gallery into a charred landscape through silk murals and photographic imagery depicting the aftermath of prescribed burns and natural wildfires. In 2025, The Charcoal Forest was also exhibited at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois.

Other solo exhibitions exploring the natural world include ELEMENTS: Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, presented at the Addison Center for the Arts in 2023; Blue Moon Gallery and Gallery Seven in 2022; A. Smith Gallery and the Brushwood Center in Ryerson Woods in 2020.
Examples of group exhibitions include: PhotoPlace Gallery, Texas Center for Contemporary Arts, d’Art Center, and Maryland Federation of Arts, plus juried and invitational exhibits throughout the Midwest.

Her photography has received numerous awards. Her image The Stillness After, received the Grand Prize Award from the International Photography Hall of Fame competition in 2024. Her images have appeared in Black & White magazine, where she was a two-time Merit Award winner, and her photography has also been featured on the BBC and National Geographic and Peter Greenburg, CBS Travel Commentator, websites.

Creating Photothreads Imagery

While there is nothing more I love than making a great photo, I am equally happy taking the original image and doing additional processing to make it special.

The stitched works are printed on Hahnemühle Rice Paper using a professional Epson printer. The paper’s lightweight structure allows for machine stitching while maintaining exceptional image quality. I often incorporate metallic thread and may add scrim, gauze, metallic Lokta paper, or found objects to enhance texture, rhythm, and depth.
